For two years, every conversation I’ve had about ChatGPT and marketing has been the same question: how do I get my brand mentioned in the answer? That’s the organic game — earning a citation when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. This week, the question quietly flipped. You can now buy your way onto that surface, and as of this release, you can manage it like an actual performance channel instead of a science experiment.

Here’s the thing most of the coverage will undersell: there is no flashy flagship feature in this update. It’s conversion bidding, advanced matching, geo exclusions, budget pacing, and a bulk API — the plumbing. And boring plumbing is exactly how a novelty becomes a channel. When a platform starts shipping the unglamorous infrastructure, it’s telling you what it wants next: real performance budgets, not experiment dollars.

What actually shipped

ChatGPT Ads rolled out eight advertiser updates at once. Grouped by what they actually let you do, the pattern is obvious — this is a platform closing the gap with Google and Meta on table stakes.

ChatGPT Ads grows up: eight updates grouped into bid and pace, measure, and manage at scale

A few details worth holding onto. The new conversion objective runs as optimized CPC (oCPC): it steers delivery toward clicks more likely to convert, but you’re still billed per click, not per conversion. Daily budgets are shifting to a rolling seven-day average, so spend will flex day to day — don’t panic at a single day’s overspend. And Automatic Advanced Matching, which uses hashed customer data to attribute more conversions, lives under Tools > Conversions > Data Source. Turn it on before you spend.

Why a boring release is the whole story

Look at the list again and you’ll notice every item mirrors something advertisers already lean on elsewhere: conversion-based bidding, advanced matching, average daily budgets, bulk campaign management, geo controls, app measurement partners. None of it is novel to marketing. It’s only novel to ChatGPT. That’s the tell. A platform doesn’t build async bulk APIs and mobile measurement integrations to keep hobbyists happy — it builds them because agencies and in-house teams managing real budgets asked for them, and OpenAI wants that money.

Give the skeptics their due

To be fair, this is still early, and I’d push back on anyone calling ChatGPT Ads a must-buy today. Reporting is thin — impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM, conversions, and not much beyond that. Scale and audience quality are unproven next to Google and Meta. And “conversion bidding” here still charges per click; it optimizes toward clicks likely to convert rather than bidding to a true cost-per-conversion. This is a maturing platform, not a mature one.

But that’s the case for moving now, not against it. Early is when inventory is cheap, competition is thin, and you can learn the platform on a small budget before the CPMs climb. The one thing you can’t buy back later is the head start — and thanks to this release, you can finally take that head start with real measurement underneath it.

Nobody remembers who ran the flashy first ad on a new platform. They remember who had conversion tracking wired up before the CPMs got expensive.

What to do now (in this order)

1. Wire up measurement before you spend a dollar

Turn on conversion tracking and Automatic Advanced Matching first. A test you can’t measure is just spending — this is the same discipline I harp on with paid search, where you ground every target in real business math before you optimize. Measurement first, budget second.

2. Run one small oCPC test on the Conversions objective

Spin up a single conversion-optimized campaign with a deliberately small budget. Judge it on conversions and cost-per-conversion, not on CPC — a higher CPC that buys better-converting clicks is the entire point of the objective.

3. Set geo exclusions so you’re not paying for markets you can’t serve

The new geographic exclusions are the simplest money-saver in the release. Carve out regions you don’t ship to or can’t service before they quietly eat your test budget.

4. Expect your daily spend to flex

With average daily budgets over a rolling seven days, one day may spend above your number and another below. Watch the seven-day total, not the daily line, so normal pacing doesn’t get mistaken for a problem.

5. If you run an app, connect AppsFlyer or Adjust

The new mobile measurement integrations make app installs and in-app events trackable from ChatGPT Ads. If app installs are your goal, wire this up before the test so the data is clean from day one.

6. Treat it as a test line item with a kill criterion

Give it a fixed test budget and decide, up front, what result would make you scale it and what would make you shut it off. That’s the difference between a disciplined experiment and a shiny-object bet.

My POV: this is the paid lane onto the surface you’ve been chasing

For a year I’ve been telling clients that AI answers are the new front door and that the work is earning your way in — the same argument I made about getting cited in AI Overviews. This release adds a paid lane onto that exact surface. The smart move isn’t to abandon the organic work; it’s to treat AI visibility as organic and paid together, and to run a measured test now while it’s cheap. A vendor waits for someone else’s case study and buys in once it’s expensive. A partner runs the disciplined test this month and walks into that conversation with their own data. This whole update is a gift to whichever one you hired.

The bottom line

ChatGPT Ads didn’t launch a headline feature this week — it quietly installed the boring infrastructure that turns a curiosity into a channel you can actually run: conversion bidding, real attribution, geo controls, budget pacing, and bulk tooling. It’s still early and still unproven at scale, which is precisely why a small, well-measured test right now is the highest-leverage hour a performance marketer can spend. Get in while it’s cheap, and get in with your tracking on.
